Surface Area of a Cylinder

The surface area of a cylinder calculator finds any of these three values: Area, Radius or Height. The total surface area includes the two circular bases and the curved side. Enter two values and the missing one is calculated automatically.

How it works

Each base is a circle with area π × Radius², and the side unrolls into a rectangle of 2 × π × Radius by Height. Adding them:

\[ Area = 2 \pi \times Radius \times (Radius + Height) \]

To find the height, divide the area by 2 × π × Radius and subtract the radius. To find the radius, the calculator solves the quadratic equation for you.

Example

A cylinder has a radius of 5 and a height of 2. The surface area is 2 × π × 5 × (5 + 2) = 70π ≈ 219.91. If you know the area and the radius, leave the height empty and the calculator finds it.
